Legend Returns: Patrick Ewing Joins Knicks as Ambassador and Assistant Coach
October 5, 2024The New York Knicks have announced that Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing is rejoining the organization as a basketball ambassador.
Ewing expressed his excitement about returning to the Knicks, stating he will always be a Knick and a New Yorker.
Knicks president Leon Rose emphasized Ewing's significance to New York basketball and his unmatched knowledge both on and off the court.
Ewing was a central figure during the Knicks' championship-contending era in the late '80s and '90s, solidifying his legacy as the team's all-time leading scorer with 23,665 points.
Drafted as the No. 1 pick in the 1985 NBA Draft, Ewing played 15 seasons with the Knicks and was selected as an All-Star 11 times.
He holds franchise records for points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and games played, showcasing his all-around impact on the team.
His return coincides with a promising period for the Knicks as they build a championship-level roster, and he will also assist as an assistant coach for FIBA AmeriCup qualifying.
In this role, Ewing will work under head coach Stephen Silas during two-game windows of qualifying in November and February.
Ewing may also serve as a mentor to newly acquired player Karl-Anthony Towns as the Knicks aim for a championship.
Before this role, Ewing worked as an assistant coach for various NBA teams and served as head coach at Georgetown University, where he won the NCAA championship in 1984.
His coaching experience includes a 14-year career as an assistant in the NBA and leading Georgetown from 2018 to 2023.
Ewing looks forward to collaborating with team president Leon Rose, head coach Tom Thibodeau, and the rest of the organization.
