April 18, 2025
With his experience and success, Cherundolo is expected to have numerous coaching opportunities in the future upon returning to Germany.
LAFC is set to play against the Portland Timbers on April 19, 2025, just a day after Cherundolo's announcement.
Before joining LAFC, Cherundolo managed the USL Championship team Las Vegas Lights and held several coaching roles in Germany.
The team reached the MLS Cup final again in 2023 but lost to the Columbus Crew, and faced several close defeats in other competitions during his tenure.
LAFC's co-president and general manager, John Thorrington, praised Cherundolo's leadership and contributions to the club.
Cherundolo aims to finish the 2025 season successfully, continuing to work with players and staff to pursue more trophies.
Cherundolo expressed that the decision to leave was made after much reflection and discussion with his family, highlighting the emotional challenges of moving from Germany to the U.S. in 2021.
Despite his love for LAFC and the city, Cherundolo emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of his family, as his wife and children are German.
Under Cherundolo's leadership, LAFC achieved significant success, winning the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup in 2022, and the U.S. Open Cup in 2024.
Steve Cherundolo, head coach of LAFC, announced on April 18, 2025, that he will step down at the end of the 2025 MLS season to return to Germany with his family.
Last year, LAFC finished first in the Western Conference, but the team has started the current season with a 4-4-0 record, placing them seventh.
Cherundolo's coaching record stands at 87 wins, 43 losses, and 26 ties across all competitions during his tenure with LAFC, including a record 58 MLS wins since 2022.
