This alarming pattern first emerged during a critical doubleheader between the Mets and Braves on September 30, before the playoffs officially began.

In Game 1 of that doubleheader, Braves closer Raisel Iglesias, who had a stellar 1.72 ERA prior to the game, allowed two runs and a home run.

Similarly, Yankees closer Luke Weaver, boasting a 0.92 ERA in his last 17 regular-season outings, surrendered a game-tying homer in the ninth inning of the same game.

As the postseason progressed, several top relievers, including Devin Williams and Phil Maton, have struggled significantly compared to their regular-season performances.

For instance, Williams allowed more runs in one playoff game than he did throughout his entire regular season, while Maton also faltered against the Brewers.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, who had only given up two home runs in the entire regular season, shockingly allowed two in back-to-back at-bats during Game 3 of the ALCS, enabling a Yankees comeback.

Mets closer Edwin Díaz, with a remarkable 0.63 ERA in previous outings, also struggled, giving up a three-RBI double and a two-run homer later in the playoffs.

As of Game 3 of the ALCS, there have been 10 game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the eighth inning or later, tying a postseason record.

This trend suggests that hitters are outperforming quality pitching, challenging the traditional belief that good pitching beats good hitting, especially in October.
