A groundbreaking auction dedicated entirely to Harry Potter memorabilia is set to feature two rare first editions of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone', with expectations of achieving up to £100,000.
Hosted by Jim Spencer at Rare Book Auctions in Lichfield, Staffs., the auction is anticipated to generate over £126,000 in total.
The second first edition, in pristine condition, has a guide price of £60,000 to £80,000 and was acquired after the vendor read a review in 'The Bookseller'.
These first editions are part of the original print run of just 500 hardback copies released in 1997, making them some of the rarest and most sought-after Harry Potter books.
Jim Spencer, who has sold over £1 million worth of Harry Potter books in the past six years, has identified 20 first editions from the original run.
The auction will also showcase three paperback first editions of 'Philosopher’s Stone', with two estimated at £6,000 to £8,000 and a third at £800 to £1,200 due to its used condition.
Adam McCulloch, Christine's son, expressed excitement about the auction, reflecting on the book's importance in his childhood and the enduring popularity of the Harry Potter series.
Christine fondly remembers the joy of purchasing the book from Kenilworth Books, an independent bookstore that is still operating today.
Among the highlights is a first edition purchased in 1997 by Christine McCulloch after seeing it featured on 'Blue Peter', now estimated to sell for between £30,000 and £50,000.
Other notable items include uncorrected proofs of 'Philosopher’s Stone' that sold for £15,000 and £11,000, along with two rare 15th Anniversary competition prize editions.
