Nvidia RTX 50 GPUs Plagued by Crashes and Black Screens Amid Ongoing Investigation
February 22, 2025
Nvidia is currently investigating a series of crashes and black screen issues affecting its RTX 50 series GPUs, which have also been reported in the older 40- and 30-series cards.
Users have experienced a range of problems, including game crashes, minor stuttering, and full blue screens of death, particularly with the RTX 50 series.
These issues began to emerge after the release of the 572.16 driver, and although Nvidia acknowledged the problems over a week ago, they have not provided a timeline for a resolution.
The latest driver update, 572.47, offered minimal bug fixes, primarily addressing display stability after waking from sleep, which has left many users dissatisfied.
An Nvidia staff member named Manuel confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether a driver update or a VBIOS flash will be necessary to fix the issues.
Some users have discovered temporary workarounds by capping their display refresh rate to 60Hz or downgrading to PCIe 4.0, suggesting potential compatibility issues with PCIe 5.0.
These ongoing issues are particularly concerning given the current challenges regarding the pricing and availability of these GPUs, making it difficult for consumers to find them in stock.
Moreover, Nvidia's new GPU lineup has faced additional problems, including melting power connectors and some units shipping with fewer ROP units than advertised.
The root cause of these problems remains unclear, but it may involve a combination of faulty drivers and firmware bugs in the RTX 50 chips.
