Sony Plans New Handheld for PS6 Amid Nintendo and Microsoft Competition
April 15, 2025
Sony is reportedly working on a handheld device designed to complement the PlayStation 6, although it may be less powerful than the current PS5.
This new handheld is expected to build on the PlayStation Portal, which has been successful in streaming PS5 games, positioning it to compete with the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Recent leaks indicate that this handheld will utilize a 3nm system on chip (SoC) that draws 15W, suggesting it may not support native PS5 gameplay.
These leaks are consistent with earlier reports that Sony is developing two SoCs for the PlayStation 6, which are set for tapeout later this year and will feature AMD's Zen 6 and UDNA architectures.
Despite the limitations of the new handheld, developers may create 'portable' modes for PS5 games to enhance compatibility.
In a competitive move, Microsoft is also entering the handheld market with a new console expected in 2027, alongside a handheld device codenamed 'Keenan' anticipated to launch later this year.
The Xbox handheld will feature a user interface specifically tailored for gaming, integrating elements from both Xbox and Windows to compete with existing handhelds like the Steam Deck.
For context, the Steam Deck utilizes a 6nm APU at 15W, while competitors like the Asus ROG Ally X and the upcoming Switch 2 are equipped with more advanced chips that operate at higher wattages.
Looking ahead, Zen 6 CPUs are expected to primarily use 3nm transistors, with some components potentially based on a 2nm node, and are projected to launch in consumer PCs in 2026, with integration into the PS6 around 2027 or 2028.
