Professor Graham Peaslee advises consumers to opt for cheaper wristbands (under $15) and to check manufacturers' websites for safer materials like silicone, leather, or fabric.
He emphasizes that consumer demand can significantly influence manufacturers; if consumers stop purchasing products containing fluro elastomers, manufacturers are likely to reduce production.
Fluro elastomers, which are synthetic rubbers used for waterproofing, pose serious health risks, including increased cancer risk and immune system compromise.
Despite evidence of their harmful effects, North America has seen limited success in regulating the production of PFAS chemicals.
Researchers at Notre Dame have identified a dangerous chemical in smartwatch and fitness tracker wristbands, urging consumers to be cautious with their purchases.
This particular PFAS is concerning due to its persistence in the environment, remaining in landfills for hundreds of years and potentially contaminating water supplies.
There are approximately 14,000 types of PFAS, with the specific chemical found in wristbands being prevalent in more expensive brands, particularly those priced at $30 or more.
Health effects associated with PFAS include various cancers, liver and thyroid disorders, and immune suppression, highlighting the significant hazards these chemicals pose.
While Europe is advancing toward regulation, only a few states in North America have taken action against the use of these chemicals in consumer products.
Professor Peaslee and his team initiated their study after observing harmful chemical advertising in a newspaper, leading them to purchase 22 smartwatch wristbands for analysis.
The chemical in question is a type of polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), commonly known as 'forever chemicals', which are synthetic substances found in various products, including makeup and firefighter uniforms.
