Scout Motors has unveiled its electric Traveler SUV and Terra pickup, both of which now feature a new range extender option.

Additionally, Scout Motors plans to sell a jerry can as part of the range extender option for added emergency backup.

Range extenders have fallen out of favor due to noisy engines ruining the EV experience, but Scout aims to improve this with a quiet engine placement.

The inclusion of a range extender addresses range anxiety for off-road enthusiasts, potentially making Scout's offerings more appealing than competitors by 2027.

Keogh reassured that the gas engine will not compromise the vehicles' power, off-roading capabilities, or towing capacity.

CEO Scott Keogh noted that the range extender was not part of the original plan, as Scout is targeting markets with limited charging infrastructure.

Ryan Decker, head of strategy, emphasized that the body-on-frame design provides ample space to discreetly house the engine without affecting the driving experience.

Scout's design allows the range extender to be positioned far from passengers, minimizing noise and vibration during operation.

The range extender engine is expected to be sourced from the Volkswagen Group, possibly a small engine from their Euro-market lineup.
