Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced a significant increase in Austria's federal disaster fund to 1 billion euros, aimed at aiding recovery from the catastrophic floods that have devastated Lower Austria and surrounding regions.

These floods are reported to be the worst in central Europe in over two decades, resulting in widespread destruction and at least five confirmed fatalities in Austria.

The severe flooding was triggered by torrential rains that brought several times the usual September rainfall to eastern Austria in a short period.

The death toll from the flooding has risen to four, including elderly victims, while investigations into the causes of these deaths are ongoing.

Thousands of households have lost electricity, and many communities are currently without access to drinking water and sewage systems due to the floods.

In response to the disaster, Lower Austria has already received 45 million euros in emergency aid from the disaster fund to support those most affected.

Expanded housing support totaling 40 million euros will assist residents whose homes were damaged, along with additional hardship assistance for those whose homes are uninhabitable.

Chancellor Nehammer emphasized the importance of prompt aid, stating, 'Those who help quickly help twice,' as local authorities work to facilitate support for residents.

Local authorities are the primary points of contact for residents seeking assistance, with mayors and municipal offices playing a crucial role in accessing disaster fund support.

Insurance companies are striving for a 'rapid and unbureaucratic claims settlement' process to help affected individuals recover from their losses.

Vice-Chancellor Kogler highlighted the need for coordinated efforts among municipalities, provinces, and the federal government to enhance disaster preparedness for future events.

As the situation improves with receding water levels, the Austrian government is committed to investing approximately one billion euros in flood protection initiatives over the coming years to prevent future disasters.
