The animated film, directed by Samuel Jerome Mason, follows a group of school friends transformed by music as they navigate the challenges of adulthood in a shadow world.
Produced by Miller's indie label Remember Music in collaboration with Warner Records and Hornet Studios, the film aims to capture the essence of Miller's artistic vision.
Advance screenings of the film will take place in major cities, including New York City and Pittsburgh, with tickets priced at $5, benefiting the Mac Miller Fund.
Following its premiere, the film will be screened in additional cities worldwide, including Toronto, London, Paris, Melbourne, Berlin, Sydney, Dublin, and Auckland.
Miller's estate emphasized the importance of this project, noting that he had commissioned artwork and frequently discussed its release prior to his passing.
Miller, who passed away in 2018 from an accidental overdose, previously released the posthumous album "Circles" in 2020, which served as a companion to his earlier work, "Swimming."
Mac Miller's highly anticipated posthumous album "Balloonerism" is set to be released on January 17, 2025, and will be accompanied by a short animated film.
The animated companion film, also titled "Balloonerism," will premiere in the U.S. on January 15, 2025, and internationally on January 16, 2025.
This project, which has been in the works since 2014, is significant to Miller's estate as it aims to present an official version of an album that he valued, amidst the circulation of unofficial versions.
The album is executive produced by a team that includes Michael Feder, Greg Bedard, Hana Shimizu, and Heather Hardin.
"Balloonerism" features 14 tracks, including a collaboration with SZA on the song "DJ’s Chord Organ," and an appearance from Miller's alter-ego, Delusional Thomas, on the track "Transformations."
The lead single from the album, "5 Dollar Pony Rides," featuring production from Thundercat, has already been released and reflects on a relationship through nostalgic lyrics.
