As of January 1, 2024, North Carolina has implemented new fees for electric vehicles ($180) and plug-in hybrids ($90).

The fees aim to compensate for the lower gas tax contributions from owners of energy-efficient vehicles.

North Carolina is allocating nearly 6% of state sales tax revenue to the Highway Fund to further support infrastructure.

Starting in July, a 2% charge will be applied to online payments to cover credit and debit card transaction fees.

These measures are designed to bridge the funding gap for road and bridge maintenance amid some opposition from vehicle owners.
