U.S. Shuts Down 'PopeyeTools' Cybercrime Hub, Charges Three Administrators in Major Crackdown
November 21, 2024U.S. authorities have successfully dismantled the cybercrime website 'PopeyeTools,' unsealing charges against its three administrators: Abdul Ghaffar, Abdul Sami, and Javed Mirza.
This operation is part of a larger initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) to combat cybercrime and safeguard the public from financial fraud.
PopeyeTools served as a significant online marketplace for cybercriminals, catering to thousands of users globally, including those involved in ransomware and other sophisticated cybercrimes.
Launched in 2016, the platform facilitated the sale of stolen credit card information, hacking tools, and crime tutorials, generating an estimated revenue of $1.7 million.
The marketplace reportedly sold unauthorized payment card data and logs of stolen bank account details, serving over 227,000 customers.
Services offered by PopeyeTools included bundles of stolen financial data, spam email lists, scam website templates, and educational materials for committing fraud.
To maintain customer satisfaction, the platform even provided refund policies and replacements for non-functioning data.
The seizure operation included multiple domains associated with PopeyeTools, as well as the confiscation of $283,000 worth of cryptocurrency linked to its illicit activities.
The domains seized include PopeyeTools.com, PopeyeTools.uk, and PopeyeTools.to, which now display a warning banner about law enforcement's involvement.
The three charged individuals, aged 25, 35, and 37, face serious charges including conspiracy to commit access device fraud, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each charge.
The investigation, led by the FBI, has raised questions about the suspects' current locations and the possibility of extradition.
The operation marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against cybercrime, highlighting the commitment of U.S. authorities to disrupt such illegal activities.
