Nigerian Cybercriminals Face Justice in US: Lengthy Sentences for BEC Fraudsters
November 8, 2024A significant number of Nigerian cybercriminals have faced justice in the United States recently, with many receiving lengthy prison sentences.
One notable case involves Babatunde Francis Ayeni, who was extradited from the UK and sentenced to 10 years for orchestrating a business email compromise (BEC) scheme that targeted real estate transactions.
Ayeni's fraudulent activities included phishing email credentials from US real estate agents and attorneys, resulting in nearly $20 million in losses for over 400 victims, many of whom are unable to recover their funds.
Two of Ayeni's accomplices, Feyisayo Ogunsanwo and Yusuf Lasisi, have been identified and charged but are currently at large.
In a separate case, Kolade Akinwale Ojelade, also from Nigeria, received a staggering 26-year prison sentence for a different BEC campaign that caused $12 million in losses, following his extradition from the UK.
Another case involved Ebuka Raphael Umeti, who was extradited from Kenya and sentenced to 10 years, while his co-defendant Franklin Ifeanyichukwu Okwonna received a sentence of five years and three months.
Other recent sentences include Oludayo Kolawole John Adeagbo, who was sentenced to seven years for a multimillion-dollar BEC scheme, and Simon Kaura, who received five years for selling stolen financial information.
