REvil Hacker Sentenced to Over 13 Years for Multi-Million Dollar Ransomware Crimes
May 3, 2024Yaroslav Vasinskyi, a REvil ransomware gang member, has been sentenced to over 13 years in prison in the US.
Vasinskyi was involved in more than 2,500 ransomware attacks, including the notable 2021 Kaseya incident.
He demanded in excess of $700 million in ransoms and engaged in money laundering through cryptocurrency platforms.
The US Department of Justice has successfully forfeited millions in ransom payments associated with these attacks.
Despite Russia's claims of a crackdown on REvil in January 2022, new REvil-linked malware continued to surface afterwards.
The US Department of Justice is pressing federal agencies to rectify a critical security flaw in GitLab to prevent such account takeovers.
