Ryanair Urges Action as Security Delays Cause Chaos at Charleroi Airport
April 17, 2025
As the busy Easter weekend approaches, passengers at Charleroi Airport have faced security check delays of up to 90 minutes, prompting Ryanair to urgently call for action.
Ryanair has previously urged airport management to tackle the staffing shortage, but claims that no effective solutions have been implemented thus far.
The airline has criticized the airport's operation of just 50% of its security lanes due to staffing shortages, labeling the situation as 'unacceptable.'
While the Walloon government is reportedly examining the situation, Ryanair stresses the need for immediate solutions to prevent further disruptions during the Easter travel rush.
To alleviate the situation, Ryanair proposed two potential solutions: allowing a second security provider to assist in staffing all lanes or deploying trained military personnel, as has been done at other European airports.
Currently, only half of the 11 security lines at Charleroi Airport are operational, which Ryanair deems insufficient for the daily traffic and the anticipated surge of travelers.
In early April 2025, 2,000 passengers missed their flights due to these delays, leading Ryanair to request that the Walloon government address the critical shortage of security personnel.
Ryanair's Chief Operations Officer, Neal McMaham, emphasized that despite months of requests, the airport has failed to resolve the staffing issue.
