Brussels Tunnel Glitch Causes Major Traffic Chaos, Delays Lasting Up to 1.5 Hours
March 28, 2025
On March 28, 2025, a general technical issue caused the temporary closure of 12 tunnels in Brussels, impacting fire detection and CCTV systems.
The closures affected all tunnels longer than 300 meters and lasted until approximately 7:15 AM.
The technical glitch was resolved by 7:15 AM, after which the Brussels Transport Agency, Brussel Mobiliteit, conducted individual checks on each tunnel before reopening them.
These closures were implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure safety until the issues were fully resolved.
The affected tunnels included Trône, Stéphanie, Louise, Bailli, Loi, Rogier, Montgomery, Cinquantenaire, Porte de Hal, Reyers, Belliard, and Annie Cordy.
As a result of the closures, significant traffic disruptions occurred throughout and around the city, with an estimated one and a half hours of delays on the southern ring road between Koekelberg and Madou.
Motorists on the E40 from Leuven faced delays of approximately 45 minutes, while drivers entering Brussels from the east experienced delays of around 30 minutes.
Travelers from Etterbeek to Montgomery encountered even longer delays of around 45 minutes.
During the morning commute, travel times from Koekelberg to Kust-Wet increased by 30 minutes.
Additionally, there were 20-minute slowdowns near the Porte de Hal heading towards Koekelberg.
By the time of the report, Brussels Mobilité confirmed that the issue had been resolved.
