$700M Kwinana Freeway Expansion Unveiled: Major Traffic Relief for Southern Suburbs Commuters
January 22, 2025On January 22, 2025, Premier Roger Cook announced a significant funding initiative in Kwinana aimed at improving traffic conditions for commuters in the southern suburbs.
The WA Labor government has pledged $700 million for the widening of the Kwinana Freeway, contingent upon a $350 million contribution from the federal government.
Cook highlighted the importance of this project, noting it would alleviate traffic for over 100,000 daily movements in the area.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti projected that by 2031, an additional 20,000 vehicle movements are expected, with commuters saving an estimated 10 minutes on average.
As part of the project, an additional southbound lane will be added between Roe Highway and Berrigan Drive, expanding this section to five lanes, while another lane will be added from Russell Road to Beeliar Drive, resulting in four lanes.
The project also includes adding an additional lane in both directions between Russell Road and Mortimer Road, increasing capacity from two to three lanes.
In addition to the widening, the freeway will be upgraded to a smart freeway from Safety Bay Road to Roe Highway, incorporating traffic signals at on-ramps to better manage traffic flow.
Construction is slated to begin in 2028, with an anticipated completion date set for 2030.
This announcement is part of Labor's broader campaign to address congestion, following a commitment to fix the Erindale Road Reid Highway intersection.
Moreover, Labor has committed to several other road projects in the southern suburbs, including $17 million for roundabouts in Byford and Mundijong, $7 million for upgrades to Baldivis Road and Kulija Road, and a $1.5 million contribution for Nicholson Road and Warton Road intersection upgrades.
