A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck the Victorian town of Woods Point at 3:48 AM on August 7, 2024.

The epicenter of the quake was located in Woods Point, with residents in Melbourne's outer suburbs reporting they were shaken awake.

The earthquake was measured at a depth of eight kilometers and was felt in several nearby towns, including Wangaratta, Benalla, South Morang, Healesville, Yarra Junction, and Dargo.

Despite generating over 1,700 reports of tremors, authorities have not reported any damage to buildings or infrastructure.

The Victorian State Emergency Service confirmed there are no significant damage reports, although minor damage may have occurred.

Residents have been warned to prepare for possible aftershocks following this earthquake.

In case of an aftershock, residents are advised to drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.

Many residents took to social media to share their experiences, describing how they were woken up by the shaking and rattling windows.

Seismologist Adam Pascale noted that this tremor is part of ongoing seismic activity from a larger earthquake that occurred in September 2021.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Australia following the quake.

Geoscience Australia recorded over 1,500 reports of the tremor being felt across various locations.

Residents are urged to avoid damaged structures and report any issues requiring assistance.
