Queensland Launches Historic 50-Cent Public Transport Fare Trial to Ease Economic Strain and Boost Usage
August 5, 2024Queensland is set to launch a groundbreaking six-month trial of public transport fares at just 50 cents, starting Monday, which is the first initiative of its kind in Australia.
This fare reduction initiative is expected to save commuters approximately $150 million over the trial period, aiming to alleviate economic pressures on residents.
The reduced fare applies to all public transport modes, including buses, trains, ferries, and light rail, allowing for up to four transfers.
The Labor government hopes that this fare reduction will boost public transport usage, which currently sits at 13% below pre-pandemic levels.
The initiative also aims to reduce congestion on major roads by encouraging more commuters to use public transport.
To address potential overcrowding, the Miles government plans to add 50 new buses, with 37 specifically designated to support the trial.
Transport Minister Bart Mellish has advised users to be patient and safe during the trial, as increased patronage is anticipated.
Translink's Roman Gafa indicated that while a massive increase in patronage is not expected immediately, they are prepared to adjust services if necessary.
Previously, train fares in Queensland were among the highest in the country, costing up to $31.10 for a single adult ticket.
The Airtrain service, which was initially excluded from the fare reduction, will also see a 50% price cut, lowering airport to CBD tickets significantly.
As the state election approaches on October 26, both the government and opposition are closely monitoring the trial's outcomes, with potential for the 50-cent fares to become permanent if successful.
