A 22-year-old man died in a fire at the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Melbourne's west.

The facility is a maximum-security remand prison primarily for inmates awaiting legal proceedings.

Historically, in 2015, the centre was the site of a major riot following the implementation of a smoking ban.

Victoria Police's Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal fire.
