Developer Brings Partial HDR to PlayStation VR2 on PC, Awaits Full SteamVR Support
April 17, 2025
A developer known as whatdahopper has successfully achieved partial functionality of high dynamic range (HDR) on PlayStation VR2 for PC.
SteamVR supports 10-bit color depth for a wider color gamut, but it does not support perceptual quantizer (PQ), which is essential for a broader luminance range.
For complete HDR functionality on PC, Valve must either add PQ support in SteamVR or create a new driver that connects to an OpenXR runtime that supports PQ.
Developers will need to implement specific support for HDR in their PC VR games to fully utilize the 10-bit color depth with DriverEx.
HDR consists of two main components: a wider color gamut and a greater range of luminance; currently, only the color gamut is supported by SteamVR.
True HDR support remains exclusive to PlayStation VR2 on PS5 and is also available on the Apple Vision Pro standalone headset.
While PlayStation VR2 officially supports PC VR through Sony's SteamVR driver, it currently lacks key features such as eye tracking, HDR, headset rumble, and adaptive triggers.
Whatdahopper previously enabled eye tracking for PlayStation VR2 on PC and plans to release this feature as an open-source mod called DriverEx.
In September 2023, this developer also managed to get adaptive triggers working on PC.
