Meta introduced its Orion AR glasses at the Meta Connect event in September 2024, touting them as the most advanced fully-functional AR glasses available.

These glasses feature a diagonal field of view of approximately 70 degrees and weigh less than 100 grams.

However, Orion is currently a prototype with a projected production cost of around $10,000 per unit, making it impractical for general sale.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to offer the Orion AR glasses to developers in 2026, with a consumer launch anticipated in 2027.

The company aims to leverage the research and development from Orion to create a consumer product codenamed Artemis.

Artemis is expected to be sleeker and lighter than Orion, although it may have a narrower field of view compared to its prototype.

The success of consumer AR glasses will largely depend on the availability of useful applications, which Meta hopes developers will create using Orion by 2026.

Additionally, Meta intends to sell Oakley smart glasses in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, complementing its existing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
