As part of this collaboration, they will utilize the ChatGPT Education Tool, a specialized version of ChatGPT designed for academic institutions, which includes enhanced security features.

ChatGPT Edu is expected to assist medical students by generating study materials and quizzes, thereby fostering collaborative projects.

The AI model could serve as an assistant during patient encounters, helping healthcare providers ask relevant questions and improve diagnostic accuracy.

Xiaoqian Jiang, a professor at UTHealth, noted that the initiative aims to enhance clinical interactions and support research for both students and faculty.

Amar Yousif, UTHealth's CIO, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to improve patient experiences and bolster research capabilities.

Jiang emphasized that this collaboration reflects UTHealth's commitment to innovation and excellence in biomedical informatics.

To ensure responsible implementation of ChatGPT Edu, UTHealth has established AI guidelines that include performance benchmarks for evaluation.

Importantly, ChatGPT Edu is compliant with HIPAA and FERPA, ensuring the protection of patient and educational data.

UTHealth Houston ranks 4th in Texas for federal grant funding from the NIH, having received $309.5 million allocated for research in the fiscal year 2023.

Additionally, backend applications of the AI could streamline administrative tasks, such as appointment scheduling, thereby improving efficiency within the health system.

OpenAI will integrate pre-trained models with UTHealth's healthcare data to further enhance the capabilities of these AI tools.
