Chinese Researchers Outshine at NeurIPS 2023, Top MIT with Record Paper Acceptances
December 21, 2024The Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) recently concluded in Vancouver, Canada, after six days of discussions and presentations, attracting over 16,000 participants.
This year's conference underscored the intensifying competition in artificial intelligence (AI) between the US and China, marked by a significant presence of Chinese researchers and technology firms.
Yang Jing, founder of Paper Copilot, noted a marked increase in participation from Chinese scholars across various AI fields since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022.
Chinese universities made a notable impact at the conference, with eight out of the top 20 institutions for accepted papers, a significant increase from just four institutions the previous year.
Zhejiang University emerged as a standout, surpassing the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to achieve the highest number of accepted papers at the event.
In a highlight of the conference, a research team from Peking University and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, won one of the two best paper awards.
Liu Feng, an assistant professor at the University of Melbourne, observed a significant rise in Asian representation at NeurIPS compared to previous years.
