UK and Qatar Launch Joint AI Research Project to Boost Innovation and Ethical Development

The UK and Qatar have launched a joint Artificial Intelligence (AI) research commission to enhance collaboration in AI development between the two nations.
This initiative is supported by key stakeholders, including Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the AI Committee of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council, and the British Embassy in Doha.
Led by Queen Mary University of London in partnership with Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), the project is overseen by Professor David Leslie, focusing on ethics, technology, and society.
Funding for this initiative comes from the UK Government’s Gulf Strategy Fund, which is part of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's International Programme.
The announcement of this collaboration coincided with the State Visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to the UK, underscoring its diplomatic significance.
Qatar’s Minister Plenipotentiary, Dr. Mariam Khalid Al-Hamar, emphasized the importance of collaboration for innovation and the potential of AI in addressing global challenges.
British Ambassador to Qatar, Neerav Patel, highlighted the necessity for strong ethics and governance systems in the implementation of AI policies.
Eng. Omar Al Ansari, Secretary General of QRDI, noted the partnership's potential to advance innovation and strengthen ties between the UK and Qatar's innovation ecosystems.
Professor David Leslie remarked on the initiative's importance for exploring AI's transformative potential while addressing emerging risks and harms.
The UK National AI Strategy aims to position the UK as a global leader in AI by 2030, promoting innovation, ethical use, and talent development.
Qatar's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy seeks to leverage AI to transform key sectors such as healthcare and education, aligning with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
