Children in Crisis: Alarming Spike in Child Casualties and Malnutrition in North Darfur's Al Fasher
March 28, 2025
Six localities in North Darfur are at risk of famine due to ongoing violence and access challenges, severely impacting food security.
North Darfur is facing a critical humanitarian crisis, with over 457,000 acutely malnourished children, including nearly 146,000 suffering from severe acute malnutrition, the most lethal form of malnutrition.
Approximately 825,000 children are currently caught in a worsening crisis in and around Al Fasher, with many more likely affected by unverified incidents.
Roughly 900,000 people reside in Al Fasher, including 750,000 in the Zamzam camp, where half of the population consists of children trapped by ongoing conflict and blocked access routes.
Communities in the region are grappling with critical shortages of water, food, medicine, and nutrition supplies, with food prices having nearly doubled in the past three months.
UNICEF had delivered lifesaving supplies to Al Fasher three months ago, but these stocks are now exhausted, and repeated resupply attempts have failed due to threats from armed groups.
The Tawila-Zamzam road, essential for aid delivery, is now impassable due to severe security collapse and armed group activities targeting rural villages.
In 2025, grave violations against children in Sudan's Darfur have surged, with 110 verified violations reported in North Darfur and an alarming 83% increase in child casualties compared to the same period last year.
Over 70 children have been killed or maimed in Al Fasher in less than three months due to intense shelling and airstrikes, particularly impacting the Zamzam camp for internally displaced people.
In Zamzam, 2,300 children are currently being treated for severe acute malnutrition, but supplies of ready-to-use therapeutic food are expected to run out within three weeks, threatening the lives of 500,000 children.
Death remains a constant threat to children in the region, stemming from both ongoing fighting and the collapse of essential services necessary for survival.
