Coca-Cola Nigeria Launches Major Plastic Recycling Facility to Combat Waste
February 22, 2025
This initiative aligns with Coca-Cola's broader World Without Waste campaign, launched in 2018, which aims to collect and recycle every bottle or can sold globally by 2030.
This facility is set to collect, sort, and recycle up to 14,330 tons of plastic annually, significantly decreasing the need for virgin raw materials in the production of new plastic bottles.
Zoran Bogdanovic, CEO of Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, highlighted that this facility represents a major step forward in waste reduction efforts in Nigeria.
The recycling initiative aims to mitigate pollution associated with the extraction and burning of fossil fuels used to create virgin plastic.
The new facility is expected to bolster the local economy while supporting ongoing plastic waste management efforts throughout Nigeria.
Coca-Cola Nigeria and the Nigerian Bottling Company have inaugurated a new product packaging facility in Apapa, Lagos, designed to enhance recycling efforts and reduce plastic waste.
Luisa Ortega, president of Coca-Cola Africa Operating Unit, stressed the importance of collaborating with both local and global partners to foster a sustainable future.
Coca-Cola is also rolling out similar plastic waste management initiatives in Asia and the Great Lakes region of Canada, showcasing a global commitment to sustainability.
In 2017, Coca-Cola produced 3.3 million tons of plastic packaging, accounting for over one-fifth of the global output of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
Over the past decade, Coca-Cola has invested $1.5 billion in Nigeria and plans to invest an additional $1 billion in the next five years, contributing to job creation and community support.
