Bureau of Public Procurement Saves N1.9 Trillion; Faces Funding Challenges for Future Improvements
January 20, 2025The savings included significant figures such as N365.568 billion saved in 2022 and N146.410 billion in 2023, showcasing the BPP's effectiveness in managing public funds.
On January 20, 2025, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), announced that the agency saved over N1.9 trillion through procurement reviews and contract verifications from 1999 to 2023.
These savings were largely attributed to the Bureau's Price Intelligence mechanism, which has been crucial in preventing fund misappropriation and reducing excessive project costs.
Idem acknowledged the BPP's past achievements but emphasized the need for further improvements in governance, procurement, and project management.
The BPP's efforts have successfully prevented the diversion of government funds and have freed up resources for critical infrastructure projects.
For 2025, the BPP proposed a budget of N72.775 billion, but only N3.283 billion was allocated by the Budget Office, excluding personnel costs.
However, the agency faces significant challenges including limited funding, inadequate office accommodation, and insufficient resources for an electronic procurement system.
In the previous year, the BPP utilized N2.11 billion out of an approved N2.23 billion allocation, indicating a persistent shortfall in funding for necessary reforms.
Adedokun highlighted the need for additional funds to enhance ICT infrastructure and support e-procurement initiatives.
Hon. Unyime Idem, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, expressed commitment to addressing the funding gap and encouraged the BPP to enhance internal revenue generation.
He urged the Bureau to leverage technology for better operations, highlighting the importance of transitioning to e-procurement to improve efficiency and transparency.
The BPP aims to strengthen its audit systems to combat corruption in procurement processes and improve overall efficiency.
