At least 21 people have died following the capsizing of a boat off the coast of Djibouti, according to the UN migration agency.

The boat was transporting Ethiopian migrants from Yemen and had 33 survivors, including one woman.

This incident is the second deadly maritime accident in the region within two weeks, underscoring the perils of the Africa to Middle East migration route.

The Ethiopian ambassador to Djibouti has called for legal action against human traffickers in response to the tragedy.

Search and rescue operations are being aided by the International Organization for Migration.

A similar incident on 8 April resulted in 38 deaths, and nearly 1,000 people have been reported dead or missing over the past decade on this route.

Economic hardship, violence, and climate disasters are driving many Ethiopians to undertake this dangerous journey.
