Escalating Conflict in DRC Fuels Hunger Crisis and Displaces Thousands
March 22, 2024The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing an escalating hunger crisis due to conflict, particularly in the eastern province where violence is increasing.
Since February, 230,000 people have been displaced to Goma, raising the total number of displaced in the region to almost one million.
Over 120 armed groups are engaged in conflict over land and power, with the M23 rebel group exacerbating the situation by attacking villages and causing food shortages.
This crisis has resulted in nearly a quarter of the DRC's population facing hunger, with women and girls in IDP camps at high risk of sexual violence.
The UN World Food Programme requires $548.5 million to maintain its operations in the DRC but is experiencing funding shortages.
UNICEF and local partners are offering relief with essential supplies and services, yet access to the conflict area is challenging, and they urge for the protection of civilians and humanitarian access.
