OpenAI has launched a new feature that allows ChatGPT to edit code directly in Xcode, significantly enhancing coding workflows for developers.

This feature became available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team on March 6, 2025, with plans to extend access to Enterprise, Education, and free users the following week.

The update introduces an 'auto-apply' mode, enabling ChatGPT to make edits automatically in the IDE without requiring constant user approval, although users can still review and revert changes if needed.

Additionally, the update includes an 'Apply' button that places generated code in the correct project location, further improving workflow efficiency.

This new capability builds on the 'work with apps' feature introduced in beta in November 2024, which previously allowed ChatGPT to read but not modify code.

Despite the advantages of AI-assisted coding, concerns remain about the security and reliability of AI-generated code, as many developers report spending considerable time debugging such code.

Reports suggest that while AI tools can enhance documentation and speed up code reviews, they may also compromise delivery stability.

The trend of 'vibecoding' is gaining traction, with a significant percentage of codebases in startup accelerators now being AI-generated.

Developers are urged to consider the risks of exposing their code to third-party AI tools, although Apple assures users that their code is not stored or used for training purposes.

OpenAI has confirmed that similar functionality will soon be available for ChatGPT users on Windows, expanding the feature's accessibility.

Notable supported IDEs for this feature include Apple's Xcode, Visual Studio Code, Android Studio, and PyCharm, as listed on OpenAI's website.

Further enhancements to Swift Assist may be announced during the WWDC conference in June 2025, while ChatGPT will continue to provide additional coding support in the meantime.
