Ukraine Seeks Starlink Alternatives Amid Potential Shutdown, Secures EU and Private Sector Support
February 21, 2025
Kyrychevskyi acknowledged that while losing Starlink would be painful for Ukraine, it would not be a fatal blow, as various alternative solutions have already been implemented.
Military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi recently discussed the potential implications of a Starlink shutdown on Ukraine's frontlines during an interview on Espreso TV.
He pointed out that issues with Starlink have been evident since the fall of 2022, particularly affecting drone operations when service interruptions occurred due to decisions made by Elon Musk.
In response to these challenges, Kyrychevskyi highlighted that since 2022, Ukraine has been actively seeking alternatives to Starlink satellite terminals, showcasing proactive measures taken by the country.
Additionally, on December 30, 2024, Kyivstar, a private joint-stock company, announced a partnership with Starlink to enhance satellite communication services in Ukraine.
Moreover, Ukraine has received significant support from Germany and Sweden, which provided satellite terminals and armored vehicles to ensure robust communication capabilities.
To further bolster satellite communication options, on December 16, 2024, the European Union initiated contracts for IRIS2, a multi-orbit network of 290 satellites designed to serve as an alternative to Starlink.
