Veon and Starlink Eye Satellite-Powered Mobile Services in Bangladesh
January 24, 2025Veon Ltd is currently in negotiations with Starlink to establish a partnership aimed at delivering satellite-powered cellular services in Bangladesh.
Veon's growth strategy is centered on expanding telecom access in underserved markets while also branching into financial services and entertainment.
If the partnership is finalized, Banglalink, which is Veon's subsidiary and the third-largest mobile operator in Bangladesh, will offer the Starlink service.
Veon's CEO, Kaan Terzioglu, has stressed the importance of space-based connectivity in areas that lack reliable terrestrial network access, specifically mentioning regions like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
Terzioglu also pointed out that terrestrial networks can be unreliable during adverse conditions such as floods or energy shortages, highlighting the necessity for both satellite and terrestrial coverage.
In discussing the potential partnership, Terzioglu noted that spectrum allocation is a critical factor, as it can be both costly and challenging to secure.
Starlink's goal is to provide smartphone connectivity through satellite technology, although its services are not yet widely available for commercial use.
In addition to Bangladesh, Veon is exploring growth opportunities in other countries, including Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Mexico.
Veon's subsidiary in Ukraine, Kyivstar PJSC, has recently signed a deal with Starlink to provide satellite services, with plans to roll out satellite-to-cell text messaging by late 2025, followed by voice and data services.
