OpenAI Faces Major Copyright Lawsuit Over ChatGPT's Alleged Unauthorized Use of Authors' Works
December 18, 2024This case is being adjudicated in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, a venue known for handling significant intellectual property disputes.
OpenAI Inc. is currently embroiled in a copyright lawsuit filed by multiple authors who allege that their works were utilized without authorization to train the AI model ChatGPT.
The lawsuit brings forth serious allegations of copyright infringement, as well as violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
In response to the growing number of lawsuits, OpenAI intends to petition for the centralization of eight copyright cases against it, seeking to consolidate these matters in New York and California.
During a status conference held in early December 2024, OpenAI contended that the plaintiffs' demand for access to all models used in training ChatGPT was excessively burdensome.
