Maine Offers Free Starlink Dishes to Bridge Digital Divide in Remote Areas
October 19, 2024The Maine Connectivity Authority is leading an initiative to expand high-speed broadband access throughout the state.
This program specifically targets approximately 1.5% of Maine's most remote locations, utilizing SpaceX's satellite technology to provide internet service.
As part of this effort, Maine is offering free Starlink dishes to residents in these underserved areas.
Around 9,000 homes and businesses will be eligible for the subsidized Starlink equipment, with applications set to open in November.
Eligible residents will need to cover their monthly subscription fees for Starlink internet, which currently costs $120 per month in the US.
The Maine Connectivity Authority plans to bulk purchase the Starlink dishes from SpaceX, having selected the company for the program this past summer.
The BEAD program has recently shifted its focus to include funding for alternative technologies like satellite internet, alongside traditional fiber deployment.
To promote the program, the agency will conduct outreach through marketing campaigns and partnerships with local organizations.
Governor Janet Mills has stated that by the end of the year, every resident will have the opportunity for a reliable internet connection.
Looking ahead, Maine's connectivity authority intends to invest an additional $350 million from the US's Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program to further enhance internet access.
