Starlink's New Residential Lite Plan Offers Affordable Internet Across 30+ Markets
September 11, 2024Starlink has launched a new Residential Lite service plan in select markets, providing unlimited internet access at reduced speeds, which is seen as a potential game-changer in the satellite internet sector.
This plan offers download speeds ranging from 30 to 100 Mbps, making it a more budget-friendly option for users.
Currently, the Residential Lite plan is available in specific regions, including New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Colombia, and various locations across South America, Africa, and the Pacific islands.
However, the plan is restricted to fixed locations and does not allow users to pause their service or purchase additional priority data.
This initiative aims to address the digital divide by making high-speed internet more accessible to users in remote areas and underserved regions.
Users will receive unlimited deprioritized data each month without long-term contracts or commitments, although they may experience slower speeds during peak usage times.
The key difference between Residential Lite and the Standard package is that Lite users may experience slower speeds during network congestion, as Standard package customers receive prioritization.
Industry analysts suggest that this plan could compel other internet service providers to adjust their pricing and service offerings, enhancing competition in the market.
Customers purchasing the Starlink Mini kit can now opt for the $50 Standard monthly package, while Residential Lite is compatible with both Standard and Mini kits.
In Ecuador, the Residential Lite plan costs $35 per month, a $10 discount from the regular plan, while in Spain, it is priced at €29 compared to the regular €40 fee.
The Residential Lite plan is a rebranding of the previously introduced 'Deprioritized plan,' which first appeared in New Zealand with a 50% discount.
The lite plan has been extended to over 30 markets, including countries in Latin America, Africa, and Pacific islands, but it is not yet available in the US.
