Australian cyclist Jay Vine expressed disappointment after crashing during the time trial at the World Championships in Zurich, which cost him a potential medal.

Vine was in third place and gaining momentum in the final 10 kilometers of the 29.9-kilometer course when he lost control while taking a corner too quickly.

His hopes for a medal diminished significantly when he crashed, which was later confirmed by camera footage at the finish line.

Despite the crash, which left him bloodied and with a damaged skinsuit, Vine remounted and finished the race in fifth place, completing the course in 54 minutes and 26.16 seconds.

He finished the event with the fifth-best time, just 30 seconds behind Italy's Edoardo Affini, who won the bronze medal.

Vine described the incident as a 'silly mistake' that cost him a potential medal and stated he would be 'beating himself up' over it for a while.

He acknowledged that he went into the corner faster than during his prior course recon and felt heartbroken over his performance.

The race was won by Belgium's Remco Evenepoel, who retained his title with a time of 53:01.98.

Vine returned to competitive racing in August at the Tour of Burgos, where he won the time trial, showcasing his immense talent despite frequent setbacks.

This year has been particularly challenging for Vine, who also suffered serious spinal injuries from a fall during the Tour of the Basque Country in April.

Amidst these challenges, Vine celebrated becoming a father to a baby boy last month, marking a significant personal milestone.

As of now, there is no confirmation regarding his participation in the upcoming mixed team relay or the elite men's road race following the crash.
