Lebanon's Health Crisis: 137 Attacks Leave 65 Dead, Hospitals Struggling Amid Global Conflict
November 22, 2024The ongoing crisis has severely strained Lebanon's already burdened health system, hindering its ability to provide care now and in the future.
This fatality rate is the highest globally in active conflicts, significantly exceeding the global average of 13.3%.
Notably, in Nabatieh, the situation is dire, with a loss of 40% of hospital bed capacity due to the ongoing violence.
Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar, the WHO Representative in Lebanon, has called for accountability and adherence to international law to prevent further indiscriminate attacks on health care.
The consequences of these attacks extend beyond immediate injuries, leading to untreated health issues and a decline in access to essential services, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Of the reported incidents, 68% have targeted health personnel, while 63% impacted health transport and 26% directly affected health facilities.
Globally, the crisis is widespread, with 1,246 attacks on health care recorded in 2024 across 13 countries, resulting in 730 deaths and 1,255 injuries.
Since the escalation of conflict on October 7, 2023, Lebanon has witnessed a staggering 137 attacks on health care, resulting in 65 fatalities among health workers and patients, marking a fatality rate of 47%.
As of November 2024, 10% of hospitals in Lebanon have been directly impacted by these attacks, with 15 out of 153 hospitals either ceasing operations or functioning at reduced capacity.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reiterated that international humanitarian law mandates the protection of health workers and facilities during armed conflicts, emphasizing that attacks on health care constitute a breach of this law.
During this period, a total of 1,401 attacks were documented in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Lebanon, and Israel, with 1,196 occurring in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, 137 in Lebanon, and 68 in Israel.
