Tesla Unveils 'Cybercab' Autonomous Taxi Prototype Tour Across Europe
November 21, 2024The Cybercab operates on Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, although the most advanced features are not yet available in Europe; however, test drives with Enhanced Autopilot will be offered during the tour.
The roadshow will span six major cities, including Stockholm, Oslo, and Amsterdam, starting in November 2024.
While Tesla faces competition from companies like Waymo and Cruise, which already operate unmanned taxis in several U.S. cities, their vehicles do not yet achieve Tesla's claimed SAE level five autonomy.
Despite ambitious timelines and previous claims of widespread autonomous vehicle deployment, regulatory challenges, particularly in the UK, cast doubt on the realization of such goals.
All current Tesla vehicles come equipped with Autopilot, which offers enhanced safety and convenience features, although there are restrictions in the UK.
Tesla is showcasing its autonomous taxi prototype, the "Cybercab," to a wider European audience from November 22 to December 8, 2024, in major cities including Berlin, Paris, and London.
Designed for premium, individualized electric mobility, the Cybercab features a minimalist interior with two seats, a large touchscreen, and no pedals or steering wheel.
The Cybercab aims to serve as a ride-hailing alternative to services like Uber and Bolt, allowing owners to rent their vehicles through a mobile app.
The vehicle's design includes two outward-opening swinging doors and a spacious trunk, although it lacks a rear window, enhancing its sleek appearance.
The Cybercab will support wireless charging at speeds of up to 25 kW, with an overall battery capacity of approximately 40 kWh.
Production of the Cybercab is anticipated to begin in 2026, with a target price of under $30,000, and plans for mass production of at least 2 million units per year from Giga Texas.
The Berlin showcase will take place at Tesla's Mall of Berlin store, with exclusive access granted to members of TFF e.V. on November 21, 2024.
